“Grandmother’s House”

As a painter I am in a constant dialogue with photography and cinematography. My paintings are based on my own staged image material, drawing from both the collective image sources of films as well as my own personal experiences, memories and fantasies. In my work I’m trying to trace the existential truth lying underneath the photos surface. The final form and narrative of my paintings is the result of a long working process.

”Grandmother’s House” is a series of separate paintings which together form a filmlike chain, depicting the story of a woman who has locked herself up in her apartment yet longs for freedom. The figure of the woman is based on the memory of my grandmother, a former small-town beauty queen, who was unable to cope with her ageing. She hid herself inside the walls of her house, trying desperately to stave off her inevitable decay. By using a wig and dressing up meticulously, she tries to find a way out of her self-made prison. The windows of her apartment are covered with heavy curtains, still if you dare, you can peep outside, and if you have the courage you can even step through the door to liberty.
